I shot this video at Jello Biafra's 50th birthday bash at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, June 17, 2008.
As some of you might know, Jello Biafra's (Dead Kennedys) punk rock has always been quite loud (to say the least) -- and since I forgot to bring "ear-plugs" for the camera, the original sound on the video got COMPLETELY distorted. Hence, I decided to edit a new sound track for it with music by Franz Liszt (his virtuosic piano piece "La Campanella").
My initial plan was to bring in my big super-duper camera to shoot this event, but as you can see the mosh-pit was a bit too "lively" to support anything fragile and of monetary value. Instead I opted to shoot some snippets with my dinky el crappo camera. So now, after a few edits & sync-ups to the new sound track, the entire thing ended up almost as an absurd Chaplin/Keaton parody...
FYI -- Newt Gingrich and Jello Biafra share birthdays (mentioned in his little political speech in the middle of the video), and still to this day also Biafra is very much into politics (Green Party) and spoken-word performances.

Traditional Egypt is an interesting place all of these years after.
From mummies and pyramids to pharos and scarabs there's lots of fuel for the obsession inferno. Remember however, the goal here is for the youngsters to have a fab time, not to be scared so keep the frightening stuff small if feasible ( even if your kid is brave to a fault that doesn't suggest that some of the guests will not be scared and you need the experience to be nice for everybody ). Decorations for this aren't as complicated as you might imagine.
In reality, a number of these decorations will double quite nicely for Halloween or might already be in your Halloween stash. Firstly, if you've a cover or tent around this may make a good substitution for a pyramid. You can fill your cover or tent with relics that are authentic hunting for what would be within an Egyptian pyramid. Use skulls ( leftover from Halloween decorations ) on the floor, gold coins ( or doubloons, which can be acquired rather cheaply at many party supply stores ), sequins that look like jewels, and fake jewellery that should have been worn during the period.
Naturally the piece de resistance will be The Mummy wrapped up in the corner ( if this isn't part of your Halloween stash it should be after this ). Now, what self respecting mummies home hasn't got a great curse to go with it? Before permitting the guests into the "pyramid" you want to be sure they're privy to the curse that goes along with it. It is a fun small addition to the theme and a large amount of fun to look at their eyes as you tell the story of The Mummy within and why the crypt is cursed.
If you're still attempting to find wonderful activities you can bury treasure in your sandbox ( if you have one ) and let them all take turns digging up treasures and / or artefacts that they can take home with them. Confirm everybody has one turn and gets one thing to take home from the digging.
You may either barbecue dinner or order pizza or something simple for dinner. I would recommend letting the guests eat within the pyramid for fun ( if it's not too deeply hot ) and make allowance for a showing of The Mummy thereafter ( provided the crowd is sufficiently old and interested ). You might also permit them to play in the crypt for some time or make it an overnight event and permit them to camp in the crypt if it is a tent. Great goody bag gifts include flashlights, glow sticks, spiders, chocolate coins, stickers, and other candy jewellery. One great game for an Egyptian themed birthday party would be wrap The Mummy. Divide the children into groups of 3 and have them take turns racing to wrap The Mummy ( an affiliate of the team ) in toilet tissue. Do this so that everyone has the chance to be wrapped - just be certain to use the inexpensive makes of toilet paper for this actual project and plan on having lots in case they get a little overzealous. Most significantly you wish to plan an event that is entertaining to take part in which will have all of your guests excited to come back for the gigantic birthday smack next year. Just remember you will be anticipated to top the prevailing theme and might gain a reputation for throwing the cool parties.
